San Sebastian
A Weekend Escape to San Sebastian
When most people think of the Basque Country, they think of Spain. Bilbao began the Guggenheim effect; San Sebastian boasted of their Michelin stars; and Pamplona had their brawling bulls. But the Basque Country is made up of seven provinces, three of which are in southwestern France. During this luxurious weekend escape, you’ll not only explore Sare, France, categorized as one of the most beautiful villages in the world, but also San Sebastian and its surrounding villages. Here, you’ll not only explore phenomenal regional Txakoli wines, but also exquisite dishes like premium Galician beef (chuleta) served with just the right amount of sear, alongside a pile of crisp fries and a side salad; Marmitako – a flavorful stew with tender chunks of tuna steak, tomato sauce and caramelized onion; and Xistorra – a perfectly seared Basque sausage often served as a Pintxo. And of course, let’s not forget the piles of fresh seafood and grilled fish! Come join us for an unforgettable weekend away in Spain’s northern Basque Country!

Tour Itinerary
Day 1
The Quaint Village of Sare
Upon arrival the San Sebastian airport, we’ll head straight over the French border to the tiny and quaint little village of Sare, where you’ll stay in a 16th century maison overflowing with interesting objects and keepsakes. Outside, you can wander the four hectares of parkland planted with maples, conifers and camellias, or simply stay indoors to rest, relax and recharge before dinner. Dinner would be on your own in the village or in the hotel, where simple and unpretentious dishes are prepared using ingredients fresh from the vegetable garden.

Day 2
Basking in Food and Wine
Basque Pintxos
Today a luxury beach resort, Biarritz used to be a small fishing village famous for whale hunting until the mid 19th Century when many of Europe’s high nobility began to flock to this town, craving a seaside experience. You will then head onto Hondarribia, a charming little town right at the border between France and Spain, where you’ll stroll the old port, see the beautiful Parador, and visit one of the top Txacoli producers in the area. We will then enjoy an excellent traditional meal on the terrace overlooking the vineyard. After lunch, we'll head to the world renown foodie destination of San Sebastian, where you'll explore their gastronomic wonders. We will then get you settled in your luxury boutique hotel in the center of the city to rest before your evening out!
Day 3
A Coastal Tour
For your last day of this extended escape, we'll whisk you off on a morning coastal tour of the Guipuzcoa province. Here you’ll explore tiny fishing villages like Orio, and colorful beach side villages such as Zarautz. Lunch will be served along the sea in a family run Michelin star restaurant excelling in all the fundamentals: excellent food beautifully presented, outstanding service and attention to detail, warm welcoming interior spaces in a charming building and overall gorgeous view! After your fabulous meal, your private driver will bring you to the airport (or your destination of choice in San Sebastian) with a belly full of flavors and a lifetime of memories to bring home.
Basque Cuisine

Last Fall, I was recommended to use Catavino for four couples doing a short wine tour in Spain before a Windstar cruise departing from Lisbon, and a few days in Barcelona after. Hip Hip Hooray for Catavino! The lead clients are truly ‘over the moon’ about the trip. They travel extensively – but this was the first trip for which they were referred to me . They say they always expect some glitches, but that this trip was flawless! I see it as my personal responsibility to ensure these jewels are available to all of our clients.
